FCL (Full Container Load) refers to one 20 or 40ft container filled with cargo and is the standard set by the ISO (International Organisation for Standardisation).
LCL (Less than Container Load) refers to a shipment that doesn’t fill one 20 or 40ft standard container. The container is therefore loaded with cargo from multiple consignees. On arrival at the destination port, the goods are separated at a container freight station. LCL costs more to ship per unit of freight than FCL but may be the cheaper option for small shipments.
